Ok, this is a really simple upgrade, and I wish I could have upgraded in a more elaborate way. But I do what I can. My favorite things right now in the shop are some new rare earth magnets that I have placed all over the shop. I bought them to make a magnetic mosaic set, made by slicing the tiles I’ve made in half and gluing the magnets inside…we’ll see when and if that happens…But for now, I’ve found a great way to store a few often used, and frequently misplaced, small metal items in the shop. I can either stick a magnet directly on something, or tape a magnet to something wood by using HVAC tape. Here’s some photos, and short stories about how I used to store each item and how it is now “magnetted” (new word) in a new place. I hope you can use this idea too!
- allen keys to change out blade guards, were piled together in a mess in a tub inside saw cabinet, now easy to reach while changing guards
- wrench to change router bits was in case way up high and hard to get to, now stored with router bits by magnet taped to home-made bit holder
- key to change drill press bits was on table somewhere near the drill press, now its usually still somewhere on the table near the drill press, but I can hang it here if I just learn the new habit!
- wrench to change carving bits was under every single thing including carving and wood chips somewhere on the table, now magnetted to the shelf right in front of me
- I don’t really use these like I thought I would. But maybe that’s cause they were always impossible to find laying flat and invisible in something or on something. Now magnetted to shelf in front of me.

Ingenious! And very handy. Great trade tips. They will help you do what you do best – create wood treasures.
